The Role

As the Lead Cloud Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing, building, and maintaining a secure and compliant cloud environment, enabling researchers and regulators to collaborate safely. Leading a team of engineers, you will ensure the bioinformatics cloud platform meets the FISMA-High standards, providing robust, scalable, and efficient services to users.

What is FISMA-High?

The Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) is a United States federal law that aims to protect government information and assets against natural or man-made threats. “FISMA-High” refers to the highest level of security categorization under FISMA, which requires rigorous security controls and practices to safeguard sensitive data and systems. Implementing a FISMA-High environment involves adhering to strict guidelines to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of federal information.

Your role & responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain production-grade multi-tenant API services.
    Manage and orchestrate background tasks using databases and queues (e.g., SQS, RabbitMQ).
  • Develop infrastructure as code using Terraform for scalable and repeatable deployments.
  • Utilize AWS services, including VPCs, Autoscaling Groups, Load Balancers, AWS Secrets Manager, RDS, S3, and EC2 instances, to build robust cloud solutions.
  • Implement containerization strategies using Docker and Kubernetes for efficient deployment and scaling.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to ensure smooth and automated deployments.
  • Monitor system performance and implement proactive measures to ensure high availability and reliability.
  • Implement disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Design and implement security controls to meet FISMA-High requirements.
  • Conduct regular security assessments and audits to ensure compliance with FISMA-High standards.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of documentation related to security policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Implement and manage encryption mechanisms for data in transit and at rest.

Your skills & qualifications

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in building and maintaining production-grade multi-tenant API services.
  • Expertise in the management and orchestration of background tasks using databases and queues (e.g., SQS, RabbitMQ).
  • Extensive experience with Terraform in production environments.
  • Deep knowledge of AWS, including VPCs, Autoscaling Groups, Load Balancers, AWS Secrets Manager, RDS, S3, EC2 instances, and security best practices.
  • Proficiency in the use of AMI and containerization for on-demand jobs.
  • Expert in software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum) and project management tools.
  • Exemplary leadership and communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively across cultures and time zones.
  • Fluency in English, with the ability to effectively communicate with international clients.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities for complex engagement issues.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Able to work  on-site in district 2, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Nice-to-Have Experiences

  • Experience in cloud-agnostic architecture.
  • Familiarity with authentication systems/services with token creation and management.
  • Experience managing multi-tenant storage systems with S3 or equivalent backend.
  • Knowledge of cost-attribution for multi-tenant systems.
  • Skills in orchestrating and deploying on-demand EC2 instances and LXC containers.
  • Experience with VM Images (Packer).
  • System health monitoring with restorative actions.
  • Development and implementation of robust backup strategies and disaster recovery plans.
  • Familiarity with OpenAPI, Thrift, or gRPC.
  • Experience with security groups, secrets manager, KMS, token creation, and management.
  • Knowledge of FedRAMP.
  • Practice of test-driven development (TDD).
  • Azure experience.
